Best January Getaways in Tanzania

Your January Travel Bucket List

January opens Tanzania's calving season in the southern Serengeti, keeps Ngorongoro Crater at its dry-season best, and offers some of the clearest skies of the year for a Kilimanjaro climb. Here's where to go and why it works this month.

Ndutu, Southern Serengeti

Ndutu, Southern Serengeti

Season: Dry season  •  Average Temperature: 25°C to 30°C
  • What: The start of calving season, as wildebeest gather on the short-grass plains.
  • Why: January marks the opening weeks of one of Africa's great wildlife events, with predators following close behind.
  • When to Book: Reserve camps around Ndutu at least six months ahead — this is peak season.
  • Good to Know: Mobile and semi-permanent camps here move with the herds, so ask what's currently in range.

Every January, the short-grass plains around Ndutu fill with wildebeest as the calving season begins. It's an open landscape with nowhere for predators to hide, which makes for some of the most dramatic and unobstructed game viewing in East Africa. Dry, settled weather keeps roads passable and game drives comfortable throughout the month.

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater

Season: Dry season  •  Average Temperature: 20°C to 25°C
  • What: A dense, self-contained wildlife population inside a single volcanic caldera.
  • Why: Dry conditions concentrate animals around the crater floor's permanent water sources.
  • When to Book: Crater permits are limited daily — book your descent well in advance.
  • Good to Know: Mornings on the crater rim are noticeably cooler than the floor below.

Ngorongoro doesn't follow the same seasonal rhythm as the open plains — its wildlife is resident year-round. January's dry, clear weather simply makes the descent and the views from the rim especially rewarding, with excellent sightings of the Big Five within a single day.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro

Season: Dry season  •  Average Temperature: Varies sharply by altitude
  • What: A multi-day trek to the summit of Africa's highest peak.
  • Why: January brings clear skies and stable weather windows for summit attempts.
  • When to Book: Book routes and guides several months ahead to secure permits and huts or camps.
  • Good to Know: Pack for every climate zone — rainforest heat at the base, sub-zero cold at the summit.

January sits inside one of Kilimanjaro's two dry windows, giving climbers clearer summit views and more predictable trail conditions. Routes such as Machame and Lemosho are in good shape, though nights on the mountain remain cold regardless of the season at the base.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park

Season: Dry season  •  Average Temperature: 25°C to 30°C
  • What: Large elephant herds and Tanzania's iconic baobab-studded landscape.
  • Why: Dry conditions draw elephants and other wildlife toward the Tarangire River.
  • When to Book: A good add-on to a Serengeti/Ngorongoro circuit — book alongside those camps.
  • Good to Know: Quieter than the northern parks, even in peak season.

Tarangire is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbours, but January's dry conditions make it a reliable stop for elephant sightings, with herds gathering along the river beneath towering baobabs.
