Planning your safari

How many days do I need for a Tanzania safari?

Three to four days gives a short, focused safari. Five to seven days is a strong classic introduction to northern Tanzania, and eight to ten days lets you slow down or add Zanzibar. It is better to spend more nights in fewer places than to rush through many parks.

When is the best time to visit?

It depends on what you want to see. June to October is the dry season and a strong choice for general wildlife viewing. January to March is calving season in the southern Serengeti. The green months, April to May and November to December, are quieter and very scenic. Tell us your dates and we will match the route to the season.

Is Tanzania a good choice for a first trip to Africa?

Yes. It offers the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar in one country, and a well-planned first safari does not need to include everything.

Can I combine a safari with Zanzibar?

Yes, and it is one of our most popular trips: adventure first, beach afterwards. On a short trip, adding Zanzibar can mean extra travel, so we will tell you honestly if wildlife time is the better use of your days.

Cost and booking

How much does a Tanzania safari cost?

There is no single price. Cost depends on the number of days, parks visited, accommodation level, private or shared vehicle, season and whether flights or Zanzibar are included. Share your dates, group size and budget and we will build a realistic quotation around them.

What is usually included, and what is not?

Quotes typically include accommodation, meals, vehicle, professional guide, park and conservation fees, transfers and listed activities. International flights, visas, travel insurance, tips, alcoholic drinks and personal spending are usually extra. We put everything in writing so you can compare quotes fairly.

Should I choose a private or a group safari?

Private gives you more flexibility, privacy and control over pace, which matters for families, photographers and special occasions. Group safaris share costs and suit solo travelers or tighter budgets. Neither is automatically better.

You tell us your dates, travelers, interests and budget. We design a route, accommodation and pace around you, you review it and ask for changes, and we confirm the booking once you are happy with the plan.

How far in advance should I book?

The earlier the better, especially for peak months, popular camps, honeymoons, family trips and specific migration experiences. Early planning gives you more choice of accommodation and dates.

Visas and health

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

It depends on your nationality, so check the rules for the passport you will travel on. Apply through the official Tanzania Immigration portal, allow enough time, and make sure your passport has six months of validity and a free page. Rules and fees change, so always confirm on the official site.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate?

Only if you arrive from, or have recently transited through, a country with yellow fever risk. Check the current requirement for your route before you travel.

Do I need travel insurance?

We strongly recommend it. It should cover medical treatment, emergency evacuation, trip interruption and lost belongings. If your trip includes Zanzibar, check the current inbound insurance requirement for the island.

What vaccinations or medication should I arrange?

Speak to a qualified travel-health professional well before departure, since advice depends on your health and travel history. Bring enough personal medication, with extra for delays, in your hand luggage.

Safety

Is Tanzania safe for tourists?

Like anywhere, it has risks worth preparing for, including road travel, petty crime in cities, wildlife and regional security advice. Traveling with a reputable operator, following your guide and checking current official travel advice before departure keeps most of them well managed.

Is a safari suitable for children?

Yes, when the itinerary fits their ages. Shorter drives, fewer accommodation changes, flexible meals and downtime make a big difference, and a private vehicle helps a lot with younger children.

What are the basic wildlife safety rules?

Stay in the vehicle unless your guide says it is safe, never approach or feed animals, keep noise down near wildlife and follow park rules. Your guide’s instructions always come first.

What is the emergency number in Tanzania?

Dial 112 for police, ambulance and fire services. On your safari we also give you a direct contact for your Dawson team.

On safari

What should I pack?

Pack light, layer well and bring comfortable shoes, sun and insect protection, personal medication and a small daypack. Mornings can be cool, especially around Ngorongoro, and afternoons warm.

What is a typical safari day like?

Most days start early with a game drive, include a break at camp or lodge in the middle of the day, and finish with a late-afternoon drive. Wildlife does not follow a schedule, so patience is part of the experience and often the best moments are unplanned.

Can you cater for dietary needs and allergies?

Yes. Tell us about allergies, dietary requirements and children’s food needs when you enquire and we will arrange it with your lodges and camps in advance.

Is Dawson a good fit for serious photographers?

Yes. We build photography trips around time in fewer places, light, and a private vehicle where it helps, with a guide who understands what you are trying to capture.
