Overview

Why Nyerere?

Nyerere National Park — the northern, more accessible portion of what was once the vast Selous Game Reserve — is defined by water. The Rufiji River and its network of lakes and channels don't just sustain the wildlife here; they shape how you experience it, opening up activities that most Tanzanian parks simply can't offer.

This is where safari stops being only about a vehicle and a dirt track. Boat safaris drift past pods of hippo and basking crocodile, while walking safaris — pioneered in this very ecosystem — let you read tracks and signs at a pace no game drive allows.

What Makes It Different

Why You Should Visit Nyerere

01

Boat safaris most parks can't offer

The Rufiji River's channels and lakes make Nyerere one of the only major Tanzanian parks where a boat is a primary safari vehicle, not a novelty add-on.

02

The birthplace of the walking safari

This ecosystem is where the walking safari tradition in East Africa was pioneered — guided, armed, on-foot tracking that puts you inside the landscape rather than observing it through a window.

03

A genuine wild dog stronghold

Nyerere protects one of the largest surviving populations of African wild dog on the continent — a species now extinct across most of its historic range.

04

Scale that dwarfs the northern parks

Even as the "smaller" portion of the former Selous ecosystem, Nyerere alone is more than twice the size of the Serengeti.

Plan Your Timing

Best Time to Visit Nyerere

Access and activities both hinge on the rains — the dry season unlocks the park's full range of experiences.

June – October

Peak Dry Season

Optimal for boat safaris, walking safaris and game drives together — the Rufiji's water levels and wildlife concentration are both at their best.

November – February

Shoulder Season

Warmer, with intermittent rain; good value and still workable for most activities.

March – May

Low Season

Heavy rains limit road access and many camps close — generally the period to avoid.

Beyond the Guidebook

Details Most Tour Sites Leave Out

This is the depth we bring to every itinerary — knowledge that shapes when and how we route your safari, not just where.

The 2019 split of the historic Selous Game Reserve created Nyerere National Park from its northern section (named for Tanzania's founding president, Julius Nyerere), while the southern section remains a game reserve — a distinction most tour sites still get wrong or skip entirely.

Because boat safaris depend on river levels, the specific channels used change through the season — we coordinate directly with camps on current conditions rather than quoting a generic "boat safari included" line.

Nyerere's walking safaris are often multi-hour, guided by rangers trained in a tracking tradition that predates most of Tanzania's northern-circuit lodges by decades.

Fly-in access from Dar es Salaam in well under an hour makes Nyerere one of the easiest "true wilderness" experiences to combine with a Zanzibar beach extension — a pairing we build often.
