The Story

The mountain’s most generous side.

Kilimanjaro is famous for its snow-capped summit, but its foothills are where the mountain feeds people. Materuni sits in that fertile belt, where the volcanic soil is dark and rich and every slope is stitched with banana trees, coffee bushes, vegetables and shaded footpaths. Your walk begins among homesteads, and the waterfall is the reward at the end of it.

The trail leads down through green, cool forest toward the sound of falling water long before you see it. The waterfall drops from a great height into a pool ringed with ferns and mist, and you will feel the spray from a distance. It is a place to stand still, look up, and understand why the Chagga people have lived on this mountain for generations.

What lifts Materuni above a simple waterfall hike is the human layer. Many visits include a coffee experience, where you see how beans are handled from farm to cup, roasted over a fire and shared as a drink, along with local food and conversations with the people who grow it. You leave with a waterfall photo, but also with a sense of what everyday life on Kilimanjaro tastes and feels like.

Plan It Well

Insider advice.

How to fit it in

A full-day experience from the Kilimanjaro or Arusha area, or a relaxed cultural extension before or after a mountain or safari journey. It is especially good for travellers who prefer stories and people over game drives.

Tips from the ground
  • Wear shoes with grip. Paths near the falls can be wet and muddy.
  • Bring a light rain layer and a change of clothes if you plan to get close to the spray.
  • Carry small cash for coffee and community-made crafts.
Pairs well with

Kikuletwa Hot Springs for a swim afterwards, or Marangu for another side of Kilimanjaro.
